The Parliament of Uganda has approved the creation of 46 new constituencies raising the total number of constituencies in the country to 353 from 296.

The creation of these new constituencies was as a result of a motion for resolution of Parliament under Article 179(4) of the 1995 Constitution to create new constituencies tabled by the Minister of Local Government Rapheal Magyezi.

On 27th July 2020 Parliament approved the creation of new constituencies which were 31 in total. These were in addition of the 15 constituencies which were rejected by Parliament in June as some members cited that some counties had been left out.

The approved new constituencies are Buhweju West, Buwekula South, Kiboga West, Lamwo East, Bugangaizi South, Chekwi East, Mulanda, and Kwania North. On the same list is Buyanja East, Kagoma North, Ngariam, Agago West, Bukanga North, Bukimbiri and Nakaseke Central.

In addition to the above constituecies Deputy AG Jackson Kafuzi tabled a motion for creation of Nakawa West constituency to be split from Nakawa Division which was approved by parliament.

Despite protests from some legislators over the criteria used to designate the new constituencies, the motion was passed without debate.
