Kampala 2021! What MTV MAMA Awards Mean to Uganda

Are you one of the people who have had questions about the letter “M” designs around Kampala of late? Say no more.

MTV Base Africa has revealed that the next edition of the highly acclaimed MTV Africa Music Awards (MTV MAMA) is happening in Uganda, next year on February 20th.

The Africa-based Television conglomerate revealed through its social media pages on Wednesday that the award show will be happening in Uganda early next year.

“It’s official! Africa’s biggest celebration of music is heading to Uganda. The MTVMAMA takes place in Kampala on the 20th of February 2021,” MTV Base Africa tweeted.

To the announcement was attached a video glamourizing the award ceremony and specially highlighting the beauty, culture, adventure and the exceptional night life of “The Pearl of Africa.”

In a press conference addressing the press about the event at Mestil Hotel in Kampala, MTV praised and uplifted our very own local musicians including Bebe Cool and Sheebah Karungi.

Speaking at the event, the 2015 MTVMAMA nominee and Ugandan musical giant, Bebe Cool, emphasized the exposure this event gives to Uganda, and also the importance of awards being yardsticks for musicians to measure their success, something he said is very important for the growth of our local artists and he implored them to welcome the event.

For one, this event is very resourceful for Uganda in such a way that after all the negative reasons for which Uganda has made the news this year, the country deserves a pinch of positivity and praise for hosting an event like this one.

Also, coming right after the general elections also makes it a kind of respite for most Ugandans to look forward to. Like that feeling of calm you get lying down just after hiking the Rwenzori to its peak.

The event comes with very many upsides, from bolstering the country’s tourism, to giving our local musicians the kind of exposure that could turn an upcoming artist to “the new Fireboy or OmaLay”.

Ugandan artists have for long been fighting to break their local bubble and get out to the rest of the world. This event brings the world to them, literally, but the question still remains, do they have something of value to show the world? Are they MTVMAMA-worthy?
