We Are Coming for Them – Museveni Speaks Out on ‘Stinking’ Corruption at URA

President Yoweri Museveni has directly spoken out about the rot and corruption that has been shadowing tax collection at the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) the government body mandated to collect taxes.

Museveni, who was speaking at the reading of the 2020/2021 budget by Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, spoke for the first time against elements within the tax body that were ridding the country of billions of money each day.

URA Commissioners Dicksons Kateshumbwa and others recently resigned from the tax body under unclear circumstances with sources alleging that some of them were earning close to Shs 400M a day in bribes and corruption.

There were calls by Members of Parliament (MPs) to have these Commissioners arrested and charged before courts of law but there has not been any actions taken against them at the moment.

Museveni appointed John Musinguzi, a former advisor at State House as the new Commissioner General at URA ending Doris Akol’s close to 10 year reign at the helm of the tax body.

“There has been a lot of corruption in URA. That one I have cleaned. Those young people who were given an opportunity to serve their country were instead doing their own things. We shall come for whoever is corrupt.” Museveni lashed out.
