Uganda Won’t Get Anywhere Unless You Listen to the DP – Norbert Mao

The president general of Uganda’s oldest party, the Democratic Party (DP) Norbert Mao has said terrible things will continue to befall Ugandans as long as they don’t heed to their advice on how President Museveni can be removed from power.

While appearing on NBS TV’s Faceoff on Sunday evening, Mao said the problem of Uganda is that Ugandans are not listening to DP.

“One day after everything has failed; you will come back and listen to DP. Ugandans have to realize that the political environment in Uganda is not good for a party like DP,” he said.

Mao explained that in DP, the end and the means are tied together, adding that he rejected the idea of using Museveni’s elections to categorise a party as strong or weak, something Ugandans have been using to charge a given party.

“DP has been the champion of constitutionalism and the rule of law. I think it is unfair to judge a party in terms of numbers in Parliament. It is important to judge parties based on the values they hold,” he said.

In the run up to the 2021 elections, Mao said he would resign as President if DP didn’t get more MPs in the 11th Parliament.

But he said he had to revise those statements even before the elections and after signs emerged that elections would not be free and fair.

“Nobody kicks a dead dog. I am flattered that people keep talking about the DP, yet they say it is a dead party. Dr. Kizza Besigye was the high priest denouncing DP and UPC as sectarian parties. Nevertheless, when Saul became Paul, we embraced them,” he said.

Mao said unless the opposition gets their act together, NRM will be on vacation for the next five years.
