Uganda Registers 23 New COVID-19 Cases, Nears 1,000 Mark

Health officials have confirmed 23 fresh COVID-19 cases from some 2, 219 samples tested yesterday (June 22) raising the country’s total cases to 797.

The breakdown of the cases, according to the Ministry of Health, the new cases are;

a) 18 community infections and 05 truck drivers who were identified from different border districts and entry points.

b) Of the 05 truck drivers, 03 arrived from Kenya via Malaba while 02 arrived from South Sudan via Elegu and Bungana points of entry.

c) 18 of the confirmed cases are community infections or contacts and alerts to previously confirmed cases. 10 of these were identified from Tororo, 03 from Amuru one of which was an illegal entrant and was detected at Elegu border.

d) 04 cases were identified in Kyotera and 01 in Yumbe district.

e) All the cases registered were under quarantine by the time of testing.

f) 13 foreign truck drivers (8 from Kenya, 2 from Tanzania, 1 from Burundi, 1 from Rwanda and 1 Eritrean) tested positive and were handed over to their respective countries of origin.

In his 16th address to the nation yesterday (Monday June 22), President Museveni opened 33 border districts.

Districts with “potential clusters of infections” including Rakai, Kyotera, Amuru, Buikwe, Gulu, Arua, Adjumani, Moyo, and Nebi were however said to be still under lock to enable thorough investigation before opening.

Boarder Districts with refugees also, including Zombo, Adjumani and Arua, he insisted shall remain closed to allow time to test the refugees and a risk profiling before the final decision is made.
