Another part of the Makerere University main building, otherwise known as the Ivory Tower has caught fire and is in flames.
According to reports we are getting from the Wandegeya based university, the oldest in the country, the fire is currently blazing in the University Council room.
“Makerere University Council Room, one of the three remaining offices that was initially not affected by the fire outbreak is in flames now!” Doreen Nyanjura, the Kampala City Deputy Lord Mayor and Makerere Woman LCV Councillor announced on her social media.
“By tomorrow, we shall probably have the entire building down, the brigade which was advised not to leave the site insisted that all was well and they left!” She further said.
The Makerere University main building, according to Engineers we have interviewed is made up of 40% wood and they say that it would not catch them by surprise if the entire building is razed to the ground.
The initial fire gutted the financial section of the main building (bursar’s office) at 1am on Sunday morning and less than 24 hours later, another part is down.
Makerere University is the oldest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in Uganda and ranks in the top 5 in Africa.
The vice chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe said all important documents in the main building were turned into soft copies and safely kept – digitalised.
Calling for calm, he said the Management would embark on ensuring they renovate the historical structure and put it back to its original self.
