Members of Parliament (MPs) led by Kalungu West MP Hon. Joseph Ssewungu want the government of Uganda to explain circumstances under which, four Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) staff resigned and were not arrested.

Last week on Friday, top URA Commissioners Dicksons C. Kateshumbwa, Henry Saka, Silajji Kanyesigye Baguma, and Samuel Kahima tendered in their resignations from the government tax body under very unclear circumstances.

According to information this website has received, of the four commissioners who resigned, three had been accused of overseeing a Shs 195Bn tax waiver in a multi-billion deal involving the purchase of Sadolin Paints by a Japanese firm (Kansai Paint) in 2017.

“There is need to investigate the four officials becuase it would really be unfair to let them free.” Ssewungu is quoted to have said in relation to the saga.

The MP wonders why they were allowed to resign yet the officials in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) were arrested even before they could defend themselves.

Last month, State House’s anti-graft team arrested Commissioners in the Disaster Preparedness wing of the OPM on allegations of embezzlement and fraud and had them spend days in jail, something Ssewungu said should have happened for the URA Commissioners too.
