Mass Exodus! Locusts Leave Amudat, Headed for Nakapiripirit

Reports reaching us indicate that the deadly desert locusts have left Amudat district and are now headed for Nakapiripirit. The fast moving crop predators entered Uganda from western Kenya.

In close relation to that story, government has delivered insecticides that will be used to counter the swarms of locusts that have hit the North-Eastern Karamoja region.

The chemicals were delivered today morning at Kololo Independence Grounds and are being airlifted to the region. This is in line with earlier government promises to curb destruction of crop by the swarms that have tormented Kenya and Somalia.

Sadly however, by the time the locusts entered the country yesterday, some of the pesticides and equipment needed for spraying the locusts had not been on standby.

According to Martin Owor, the Commissioner of Disaster Management in the Office of the Prime Minister, motorized sprayers mounted on pickups and tractors were “still being mobilized.”

The locusts are currently on an exodus from Amudat to neighboring Nakapiripirit and are believed to have reached Bulambuli by close of business today.
