Opposition group National Unity Platform (NUP) is starting to witness gains from their continued pressing for release of detained comrades. According to NUP, a cumulative number of over 600 people have been in unclear custody since late last year.
Yesterday, Kyotera residents celebrayed a light moment when 18 NUP members resurfaced in different parts of the district. This totaled the number of the freed captives to 61 with the inclusion of 43 that were released in a staggered manner this month.
Most of the released were blindfolded to freedom after months of battling and their testimonies are headlined by physical and psychological struggles in captivity.
NUP has been relentless in demanding for the release of their party supporters that have been arrested without trial for over months. Party President Robert Kyagulanyi called for nationwide peaceful protests to equip their claim hence piling pressure on the authorities.
Last month, Ministry of Internal Affairs acknowledged the detention of some “political threats” by military officials. The Ministry’s initial count was 177 with only 71 names in the intersection with NUP’s list.
Accountability has become an issue on the government’s side since analogy has been minimal on its list’s compared to NUP’s. Beneath is the list of known freed NUP supporters;
