In a letter penned by the Kyambogo University Vice-chancellor Prof Eli Katunguka addressed to students, it was indicated that the university’s long awaited guild elections will have to wait once again.
According to Katunguka, some aspiring candidates have failed to abide by the Dean’s instruction of avoiding use of political party symbols/emblems.
“Following the communication from the Dean of Students dated 11th March 2020, in which she communicated the University management position on the use of political party or pressure group symbols on the ballot papers for guild presidential and guild representative council elections 2020, has come to my attention that some aspiring candidates have refused to abide by the management directive.” Katunguka’s letter reads in part.
Katunguka further assured that no candidate will be allowed to use party/pressure group symbols on the ballot while explaining that this has been Kyambogo University’s policy since its inception.
“I wish to reaffirm the University management position by stating that no candidate will be allowed to use political party or pressure group symbols on the ballot papers for guild presidential and guild representative council elections 2020. This has been the university policy since its inception and the same is clearly reflected under Regulation 22 of the Election Regulations and Guidelines of 2020/2021 issued by the office of the chairperson of Kyambogo University electoral commission 2020/2021.” The letter reads further.
While requesting the students to abide by the rules set by the management, Katunguka reminded voters to endorse leaders whose interests favor the university (non-partisan grounds).
The long awaited guild presidential and GRC elections have therefore been extended from Tuesday March 17th to Thursday 19th March 2020. More details in the letter indicate that the hall secretaries elections have also been extended to Friday March 20th.
