The COVID-19 treatment unit at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital has been filled to capacity according to the Hospital administration.
The hospital serves as a referral for COVID-19 cases for areas around Kabale district including Rubanda and Kisoro district.
Kabale District COVID-19 task force has in response suspended all non-emergency admissions at the hospital as corona virus cases continue to surge.
Darius Nandinda, the head of the District COVID-19 task force in Kabale told The Ugandan Wire that they have decided to extend the treatment unit for COVID-19 cases to the medical ward at the hospital.
“Consequently, with effect from Wednesday 18th 2020, all new incoming patients with other medical conditions will be admitted at Kamukira Health Centre 4 in Southern Division Kabale Municipality,” Nandinda said.
Nandinda appealed to the public to report voluntarily to the surveillance teams at Kabale Regional Referral hospital or Kabale District Health Officer’s Office for evaluation in case they have had any contacts with any confirmed COVID-19 patients.
The Hospital administration, District Health office and administrative officials of the municipality have further advised the public to utilize lower health centers in the region for mild illnesses and only opt for the referral for emergencies to safe guard against catching the virus in the hospital, being a treatment hotspot for the COVID-19 patients.
“Our people should choose lower health centers to decongest the hospital. Only serious emergencies should come at the hospital,” Nandinda said.
Kabale Regional Referral Hospital currently has over sixty COVID-19 patients admitted according to the hospital administration.
