On July 1, 2020, Mbarara Municipality will start operating under City Status. Ahead of the historic moment and because of in fighting among local leaders, this website understands that Hon. Raphael Magyezi the Minister of Local Government visited the district to have discussions on harmonization of interests.

The Minister, this website understands, held talks with the District Authorities and Municipal Council authorities.

The cause of division among the local authorities, we have learned, is the new staff structure, interim leadership, representation of councillors and relationship between the city and the new district among other worries.

According to the Minister, all those worries are clearly handled in the City Status legal framework which he encouraged the local leaders to always refer to.

“Mbarara City has an advantage of being a regional capital. I advise you to plan accordingly for the city you want with improved service delivery such as water, security, electricity, health care, education, tourism and roads, being given attention.” Magyezi said.

He encouraged the authorities to also sensitize the locals about the challenges that are likely to come with the new status. He cited pollution, insecurity, crime, environmental hazards and frustration.

“By July 1, 2020 you have my guarantee these cities will begin.” Magyezi said.
