Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, best known as Bobi Wine, has been unveiled as the new president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Kamwokya, a city suburb.

The Kyadondo East legislator and presidential hopeful, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu alias Bobi Wine unveiled the National Unity Platform (NUP) as the political wing of People Power Movement ahead of the 2021 general elections.

The development comes less than six months ahead of the 2021 general elections, for which the musician-turned-politician has made his intentions clear. He wants to challenge President Yoweri Museveni, who will also seek to retain Uganda’s top job in 2021.

The Ugandan Wire understands that according to the Electoral Commission (EC) website, the NUP was registered under the Political Parties and Organisations Act, and had its application for registration gazetted on December 28th, 2004 as the National Unity, Reconciliation and Development Party (NURDP).

“In July 2019, we changed the name of the party from NURDP to NUP.” MP Kyagulanyi said in his speech on Wednesday.

The Ugandan Wire understands that this change of name was approved on July 15, 2019, by the EC and it was gazetted on August 12, 2019.

The symbol for the new party, which is registered by the Electoral Commission, is an umbrella. And the MP is the party’s flagbearer for next year’s presidential elections.

The Kyadondo East legislator, who burst onto the political scene in mid-2017, has been leading People Power, which has helped mould his extended political ambitions on the Opposition side of government.

During the unveiling of Kyagulanyi as the new NUP leader on Wednesday, supporters danced and chanted songs as they held up red-and-white umbrellas in celebration of their new political chapter.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, Uganda will conduct ‘scientific’ elections come 2021. For now, the political fever is ever-rising.
