The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) a leading political party in Uganda has nominated Erias Lukwago for flag bearer as the Kampala Lord Mayor candidate ahead of the 2021 Presidential and General Elections.
Lukwago, formerly a life member of the Democratic Party (DP) joined FDC a few weeks ago in a twist that has since left his former party to the dogs. The incumbent City Mayor won the 2016 election as an Independent Candidate having grown disagreements with DP Chairman Nobert Mao.
Today, Lukwago has been unveiled at the party head quarters in Najjanankumbi as the FDC flag bearer for the position of Kampala Lord Mayor.
The development comes just weeks after the outgoing Kampala District Woman Member of Parliament (MP) Nabilah Nagayi Sempala’s nomination forms for the same position were rejected by the party citing “late coming.”
There was drama on NTV’s On The Spot program where the FDC Party Secretary General and Ms Nabilah engaged in a war of words with the former maintaining that she submitted her forms to contest for Lord Mayor late and the deadline had already been met.
At that time, Lukwago had not even formally joined the party but according to Nabilah, the party was ring fencing a position for Lukwago who was at the time still a member of DP.
The party (FDC) is expected to front Dr. Kizza Besigye for president once again having lost to President Museveni in the last four elections (2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016).
The 2021 election comes at a time when the traditional opposition parties are fighting to breathe with the entrant of a new player, Robert Kyagulanyi’s National Unity Platform (NUP).
