News just in, is that the Cabinet of Uganda has approved 7 new cities that will operationalize next year in July (the new financial year.)
The cities, The Ugandan Wire has learnt, are Arua, Mbarara, Gulu, Fort Portal, Jinja, Mbale and Masaka. Each of them will have 2 city divisions equivalent to a municipality.
This was disclosed minutes ago as Hon. Jennifer Namuyangu, the Minister of State for Local Government was addressing the media about this week’s Cabinet Resolutions at the Uganda Media Centre.
“Uganda’s Vision 2040 envisages an urbanized Uganda, an ambitious plan that seeks to elevate it to middle income status. There’s no doubt that the future of Uganda’s growth will continue to lie in new cities which will be strategic and regional.” She said.
She disclosed that stakeholders from Mbale and Masaka proposed cities expressed readiness for the two cities to become operational with effect from July 2020.
“The Ministry found the requests acceptable and presentable to Cabinet a memorandum for the revision of the phasing as follows; First 7 cities including Arua, Mbarara, Gulu, Fort Portal, Jinja, Mbale and Masaka.” Namuyangu added.
