Avoid My Name in Instances Where My Relatives Are Contesting – Museveni Warns Public

National Resistance Movement (NRM) national chairman and 2021 presidential flagbearer President Museveni has warned the public and other politicians against dragging his name into politics whenever any of his biological relatives are standing.

The President was yesterday traversing the western region of Uganda to address the violence that was registered in the Member of Parliament (MP) Primaries whose epitome was former Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana picking a gun to shoot at opponents.

He met NRM leaders in Mbarara, Kazo and Ssembabule among other places. Museveni’s brother Aine Kaguta (Sodo) is battling Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kuteesa’s daughter Shartis Musherure Nayebare Kuteesa for Mawogola North Constituency, a seat formerly occupied by Minister Kuteesa.

President Museveni says it is wrong to drag his name into affairs concerning his relatives when he is not necessarily involved.

“Do not put my name Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in issues of politics where my relatives are. My relatives are all and any NRM member who do the right thing according to the party Constitution,” He said.

Musherure’s sister Charllotte Kuteesa is married to first son Muhoozi Kainerugaba and as such, the two families are bonded by marriage but that didn’t stop their sides from clashing in the build-up to last week’s election, a nasty scene that saw the party electoral commission suspending the elections.

“I am going to bring this issue to CEC about people who are in higher NRM positions supporting their relatives to fight other NRM contenders. That’s not leadership,” Museveni said.

The President called upon the leaders to stick to NRM ideologies and just join politics to serve the people other than seeking to enrich themselves in the process.

“The main reason why people are fighting hard to go to Parliament is because MPs increased their salary. They earn more than scientists and many other important people to our country. I tried telling them not to do it but they insisted. Now, people want to leave their other work to go to Parliament and earn much. Yet, their motivation should be to serve their people rather than earn from Parliament,” he said.
