Luweero Chief Magistrate, Samuel Munobe has remanded 35 suspects to Kitalya Government Prison in connection to the protests that ensued last week following the arrest of Bobi Wine in Luuka District.

The suspects, who are mostly residents of Luweero and Wobulenzi Towns, were denied bail and instead sent to be detained at Kitalya Prison in Mityana.

Savannah Region Police Spokesperson, Issa Ssemwogerere Kibazo revealed that 15 other suspects also arrested in connection to the protests had not been brought to court due to the delay in the processing of their papers, adding that they will be brought before the magistrate as soon as their paper work is completed.

“We have their names. As I say, we have taken 35 to court and then to remand while 15 are still in custody as their papers are still being processed. I’m urging Ugandans especially the youths not to engage in protests or disrupt the peace of our country in anyway,” he said.

The remanded suspects are to be detained at Kitalya Prison until 12th December 2020 when they shall be brought back before court for their case to be heard once again.

The protests after Bobi Wine’s arrest in Luuka took place in different parts the country where hundreds took to the streets demanding for his release.

Official reports from Police indicate that the death toll stands at 45, while many more were left wounded in the scuffles with security operatives.

Police said that 362 suspects have been charged, 330 remanded, while the rest are pending court mention of their riot-related charges.
