Youthful Presidential Aspirant Yamu Burobuto Writes to EC Over Intimidation by State Security

Yamu J. Burobuto, a youthful presidential aspirant for the 2021 election has written to the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) Justice Simon Byabakama alleging intimidation and harassment of his agents by State Operatives.

In a letter dated September 30th that this website has obtained, the former President of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) says that his agents in the districts of Nakaseke, Sembabule, Kyankwanzi, Bushenyi, Yumbe and Nakasongola have been repeatedly harassed by State Operatives yet what they’re doing in the said areas is completely guided by the law.

According to an insider in the Burobuto Camp, the said agents have been canvassing the districts aforementioned to wrap about the collection of signatures that are needed for a Presidential aspirant to be fully nominated.

“We are collecting about 130 signatures per district and the people have been really receptive. They have welcomed our idea of the future that we want for ourselves, our children and our grand children and they agree that it is a discussion we need to have now and let it influence the selection of our leaders next year.” Daniel Musherura, a top administrator in the Burobuto Camp told The Ugandan Wire.

He said that the State however, doesn’t seem confortable with the way people are receiving their message and as such most of their agents have had rough days with law enforcement officers who he adds “are overstepping their duty.”

“We have therefore written to the Chairman of the EC and pray that he acts upon our grievances. We all want a free and fair election where we can subject our ideas to the population and they choose whom they deem fit. However, when some State Institutions bend the rules in favour of one candidate and pull ears of the others, we cannot achieve that.” Musherura further said.

Mr. Burobuto declared intentions to run for the top office weeks ago when he picked nomination forms from the EC and immediately embarked on a signature gathering mission.

If successful next year, he will be the 10th President of Post Independence Uganda and end President Museveni’s 35 year-old reign.

The EC acknowledged receipt of the said complaint but declined to comment about it at the moment.
