News reaching us indicate that NBS TV top news anchor Samson Kasumba was arrested last night on his way home after the LIVE AT 9 bulletin that airs at 9:00pm. He was detained at Kira Road Police Station.
The situation upon which he was arrested is still unclear since journalists are essential workers and have an extension of time with which they are allowed to move. Early reports show that he was charged with sedition.
While addressing journalists today, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed the arrest of the news anchor.
With many observers social media platforms alleging that his arrest was due to his work as a journalist, Enanga says that the investigations are in no way connected to his career as a journalist.
Enanga said that the news anchor was arrested for alleged involvement in ‘subversive activities’.
“He is a subject of investigation and it is not connected in any way to journalistic work but he is being investigated together with others for alleged subversive activities,” Enanga said.
“Detectives from the electoral and political offences department have interrogated him this morning and we are going together with him to conduct search in various places of interest. He is in good state and he is collaborating with authorities.” Enanga further said.
We have now learnt that the NBS news anchor has since been taken to his home by police to conduct a search.
