The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has called out to President Museveni and the Executive to lift the COVID-19 lockdown.
Ms Kadaga, who also doubles as the Kamuli District Woman MP, made the call last evening in Parliament as she reiterated the need for the country to be able to live with the virus, albeit, instead of ‘hiding’ from it.
The Speaker’s call comes amidst public agitation and restlessness against a sustained curfew and ban on certain businesses. Kadaga advised the government to adopt measures to allow people to live with the pandemic.
“Honourable members, I really want the government to be more serious about the issue of this COVID-19. Can’t we learn to live with it and just organise our society to manage it? Because how long is this lockdown going to stay?” Kadaga pondered.
She said that it is very important that the government guides the people on how to live with the situation instead of locking down month in, month out.
She also demanded that the government reports to Parliament about the evaluations to end the lockdown that they have made so far.
“I think the country needs an evaluation of this lockdown. So that we know how to move. This kind of keeping people in suspense is not right.” Kadaga further said.
She tasked the Prime Minister/ Leader of Government Business in Parliament to come up with an evaluation report of the lockdown and present it to Parliament for discussion.
