The Cabinet of Uganda has approved a resolution to allow five representatives for the elderly population of Uganda.
According to the Minister of Information and ICT, Hon. Judith Nabakooba, the resolution was presented to Cabinet by the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development.
She said it comes as a result of constant appeals by the country’s senior citizens to hve representatives in the August House who will carry their thoughts to the Legislative Arm of Government.
“It will depend on the contestants mental capability and the electorate’s willingness to send them to Parliament. As long as they’re 60 years, they will be eligible to contest.” Nabakooba said.
The Minister further explained that the MPs will be voted to Parliament by electoral collages within their age bracket as it is done for the Youth MP representatives.
The resolution will now be presented before Parliament by the Minister of Justice for discussion and if possible be passed as law. The Minister said if the process is swift, they will be eligible to contest as early as 2021.
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), there are slightly over one million people in the elderly population.
