The government of Uganda, in a move to protect citizens and prevent the spread of the deadly Coronavirus (COVID-19), could postpone the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled to begin towards the end of the year.
According to disease control experts that this website has contacted, gatherings such as the campaign rallies and election strategy meetings are some of the quickest ways to spread the virus among the population.
Uganda has taken steps to ensure the country is free of the virus by ensuring mandatory 14 days quarantine for all foreigners accessing the country. The visitors that refuse the quarantine are immediatelt sent back wherever they come from.
President Museveni and the government have rejected pleas to evacuate Ugandans in China over fears that the few could put the greater population at risk.
“I now understand this disease. I’m going to write about it so that the public is sensitized on how to prevent it,” Museveni said earlier last month, citing the need to have an intense sensitization campaign in Uganda to alert the public about the deadly outbreak and tell them means of avoiding contracting it.
“It is so easy to postpone the election if the outbreak spreads at a faster rate than it is being controlled. Incidentally, that would be the smartest move any government would make.” Disease Control expert Dr. Kasamba told this website.
