Kampala City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, has rapped the ruling government for abandoning the health care system in the country – something he says is pushing many Ugandans into seeking treatment abroad.
Lukwago, who belongs to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) an opposition political party, had until recently been bedridden and admitted in Nairobi Hospital.
He returned to the country on Friday 4th December after more than a week in the neighbouring Kenya, where he had gone to receive treatment.
Lukwago further rapped the ruling government for ignoring the welfare of professional doctors, many of him have gone to seek greener pastures abroad.
“The doctors that were attending to me included Prof. Lule, a Ugandan who is working in Nairobi. And another called Dr. Musoke all of whom are very senior doctors in the hospital.” Lukwago observed.
He acknowledged that the doctors in Uganda, when his situation worsened, didn’t refer him to Mulago or Kiruddu Hospital, but instead asked him to go to Nairobi.
“The health care system of Uganda is very sick.” Lukwago said at a press conference held at his home in Wakaligga, Kampala.
