Budadiri West MP, Nathan Nandala Mafabi has called for the arrest of all members of parliament on the Legal & Parliamentary Affairs Committee, for conspicuously approving the Shs1.7Bn Service Award given to the four Commissioners, saying the only exceptional thing the quartet has done is to fill Parliament with their relatives in lucrative staff positions.
He made the remarks while addressing journalists after signing the censure motion, saying for the past 23 years he has been at Parliament, no Commissioner has ever been paid any service award, saying the MPs on Legal Committee should be arrested like their counterparts on the Budget Committee that are currently under Police custody for running a corruption racket in Parliament.
“I am among the longest serving MPs here, in the last 23 years I have been here, we have never paid a Commissioner anything. I was a Leader of Opposition, I am the one that made that office better and popular, that is why people fight for it, it had nothing,” he said.
“What did these people do that was very special that we gave them a handshake? What have these women and men Commissioners done? If you look at them, what capacity do they have more than Nandala? So how can you pay somebody for nothing?” he remarked.
He further called for the refund of the Shs1.7Bn service award by the four commissioners saying, “We must deal with this vice. In fact the earlier these MPs refunded our money, the better. If they don’t, we want them to come and defend themselves here. And we are here waiting for them to come, in fact, I am looking forward for that debate and they will show us what they did which is exceptional.”
Lutamaguzi Ssemakula (Nakaseke South) welcomed Nandala’s gesture saying, “You have been absolved and history has exonerated you. I initially thought you are also support these people to take our country’s money.”
The four commissioners; including Prossy Akampurira (Rubanda District Woman MP), Solomon Silwany (Bukooli County MP), and Esther Afoyochan (Woman District MP for Zombo), sat with the Speaker of Par liament, Ms Anita Among, and were awarded Shs400 million each, with Mathias Mpuuga receiving Shs500m.
