The South Western Uganda district of Rukungiri will be lining up at least four presidential candidates in 2021 if all goes well and none of them changes plans or fails to get nominated.

With the latest announcement coming from former Government Spy and Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Charles Rwomushana, the district has a total number of four aspirants with an interest of dislodging President Museveni in 2021.

In a letter dated June 22nd from his lawyers (M/S Mujulizi Alinaitwe and Byamukama Advocates), the former head of Political Intelligence at the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) wrote to the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) notifying him of his ambitions.

“In compliance with S.3 of the Presidential Elections Act, our client hereby introduces himself to the Electoral Commission and shall in due course notify relevant Local Council authorities and Police of the area to which he goes.” His lawyers wrote.

Hailing from Kahoko Village, Nyakagyeme Sub-County in Rujumbura Constituency of Rukungiri District, Rwomushana is a former guild president at Makerere University, RDC of Pader District anda top boss at ISO.

The other aspirants from the district are Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Henry Tumukunde, youthful former FDC member Moses Byamugisha and Col. (Rtd) Dr. Kizza Besigye.

Gen. Tumukunde is a former Director General of ISO, Member of Parliament (MP) representing the army and a former Minister of Security in President Museveni’s government.

He announced his bid for the presidency on 3rd March 2020 and has since served jail time on charges of treason but was later granted bail.

Moses Byamugisha, 34, declared his bid to run for President of Uganda in 2021 as an independent candidate. The former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party Presidential aspirant made the revelation on January 10th while addressing the press.

FDC strongman and four time presidential aspirant Dr. Kizza Besigye is another Rukungiri hailing politician expected to challenge President Museveni again.

Dr. Besigye was a personal physician of President Yoweri Museveni during the 1980-1985 protracted bush war that brought the National Resistance Army (NRA) into the leadership of Uganda.

He has challenged Museveni in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016 – losing at all attempts.

Born in 1956, he is married to Winnie Byanyima – the Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV & AIDS (UNAIDS). Together, they have a son, Anselm Kizza Besigye.
