The Uganda Independent Electoral Commission (EC) Ag Spokesperson Mr. Paul Bukenya has confirmed that at least 14 Presidential hopefuls have so far returned nomination forms for the 2021 General Election.
According to Mr. Bukenya, the 14 aspirants have submitted their nomination forms, backed by signatures seconding them for verification ahead of presidential nomination that is expected early next month.
The requirement of signatures is of 100 signatures from at least 98 districts which accounts for 2/3 of the total districts in Uganda. However, it doesn’t matter how many signatures one can present as long as they are over the said threshold.
“They are supposed to submit those signatures at least two weeks before nomination, to enable the Commission to verify them,” Bukenya told this Reporter.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer, President Yoweri Museveni, National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), Charles Bbaale of the Ecological Party of Uganda, and Elizabeth Lugudde, an independent candidate are some of the candidates that have submitted their signatures so far.
Tumukunde who submitted his signatures in the first week of October, and former Makerere University Guild Speaker Yamu J. Burobuto are the others that submitted their credentials so far.
