Kyadondo East Member of Parliament (MP) and 2021 Presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine has rejected the new Electoral Commission (EC) road map that calls for ‘scientific’ campaigns alleging that it is a plot by incumbent President Museveni and the electoral body to rig elections.
Addressing the press at his People Power Movement offices today morning, Bobi Wine says online campaigns will deny the Ugandan voters their rights to participate in a free and fair election.
Bobi Wine insists that the times Uganda is going through at the moment is vital because, according to him, the country is going through a time when everything that the nation’s forefathers fought to achieve in Uganda is being watered down by President Museveni.
“A dictator will go to any height and any depth to keep power. Museveni like every dictator before him is determined to do everything to keep power. He doesn’t care about Ugandans.” Bobi Wine began.
Bobi Wine alleges that President Museveni recently met with the EC Chairman and instructed him to organise a scientific election. He claims that the excuse of COVID-19, is just a cover that the President hopes to use.
“There was no coronavirus when our consultations were disrupted. There was no coronavirus when our shows were banned. Museveni is not afraid of the COVID-19, he is just afraid of the people.” Bobi Wine added.
According to Bobi Wine, the People Power Movement will only partake in an election that is “real” and not “scientific” like the EC announced. He laid down examples of countries around the world that have organised real elections even with COVID-19 at its height.
“Malawi, Burundi and at the moment, the United States of America (USA) have organised elections that involve the people. In fact recently, the US President Donald Trump held a rally and campaigned to masses of people.” Bobi Wine said.
People Power spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, in his opening remarks, said an election is a process and not just an event and that as such, Ugandans must be involved without descrimination on every step of the way.
The Movement has as a result, rejected the option of online and media campaigns through the election and only insisted that they will only take part if the road map is updated to ensure a “real” election that involves all the people.
