President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM party flag bearer, was today in Mbale City, Eastern Uganda, for his campaign procession where he addressed, in a scientific event, several NRM political leaders.
Museveni told the NRM leaders that the government intends to embark on a planned urbanization policy in Mbale District to ensure maximum development, in accordance with the NRM manifesto of securing Uganda’s future.
“I totally agree that we should have a planned urbanization plan where settlement of people and towns can be in the low lands and tourism in the hills. If we can let the slopes to be covered by forests for the tourism, then we can have the settlements in the lowlands as we earn money from the tourism on the slopes. That’s what countries like Austria and Germany are doing,” Museveni said.
Museveni also noted that Japan, which has a population of 127 million people with as much land coverage as Uganda and Germany with 90 million people all priotize their forest cover through planned urbanization.
He remarked about the importance of the maintenance of forest cover, saying that they hold back the wind and hold the soil together preventing mudslides and keeping the soil cover.
He said this is one of the main messages of the NRM in summary and encouraged them to read the manifesto for the details about what the NRM intends to achieve.
He also said the government will work on provision of jobs to the Bamasaba, emphasizing the need for them to support the NRM in the forthcoming elections.
“About the jobs, when there are jobs in government, the Bamasaba will be considered. If the Bamasaba vote 90%, then the encouragement will be greater,” he said
Each of the NRM leaders in attendance present were to be given an allowance of Shs 100,000 for their transport costs back to their homes.
