Over 25,000 Take Part in the 2019 MTN Kampala Marathon

Today, Sunday 24th November, 2019 is the day that the 16th annual MTN Kampala Marathon took place. With runners arriving at the set off venue Kololo Independence Grounds by 5 am, the first race (42km) was flagged off at 6:40 am.

At the flagging off ceremony was the Cabinet Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng who was accompanied by MTN Uganda CEO Wim Vanhelleputte. Together they flagged off the 10km, 21km, 42km races and the 5km race for the people with disabilities in tricycles.

Paited yellow all over, Kololo grounds were flooded by runners that were well over 25,000 and available to contribute to MTN’s charitable cause of helping to better the access of maternal health care in Uganda.

The 10km race was won by 19 year old Denis Cherotic who arrived in 00:29:59 while the female category for the race was led by Sauline Chelangat in 00:35:29. They are both Ugandan and walked away with Shs 1.5M each.

The 21km men’s race was led by Jacob Kiplimo from Uganda who arrived in 01:01:53 while the female pack was led by Juliet Chekwel also from Uganda in 01:13:08. They were awarded with Shs 4.5M each.

In the 42km race, Ugandans Phillip Kiplimo and Nyakisi Adero won the men’s and women’s marathons respectively. They each walked away with 20M shillings. Kiplimo reached the finish line in 02:13:56 while Nyakisi reached in 02:41:11.

The MTN Marathon is organised by MTN Uganda in partnership with Stanbic Bank, Rwenzori Water, Huawei and New Vision.
