Presidential Candidate Norbert Mao of the Democratic Party (DP) has joined other presidential aspirants Gen Mugisha Muntu, Gen Henry Tumukunde and John Katumba to suspend his public meeting and campaigns until further notice following growing protests caused by the arrest of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine yesterday in Luuka District and consequent detainment in Nalufenya.
Mao told our reporters that he is calling upon the Electoral Commission (EC) to intervene and ensure a leveled ground or call off the elections. He said these while at a press conference in Hoima where had been for his campaigns.
The arrest of Robert Kyagulanyi, brutality of police has continued to agitate Ugandans and other foreign states and now have resorted to social media hashtags to #StopPoliceBrutalityInUganda.
By press time, Candidate Kyagulanyi was still in detention at Nalufenya with several other arrests of opposition politicians made including Kawempe North MP aspirant Mohammed Ssegirinya who was arrested today morning as he protested the detention of Bobi Wine.
In Masaka, NUP regional Vice President for Buganda Region Mathias Mpuuga, DP Vice President Mukasa Mbidde and some 62 others have also been detained at the Masaka Central Police Station over unrest and riots.
