The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) is embarking on a nationwide distribution of a total of over 1.8 million national identity cards which are ready but have not yet been picked.
According to the authority in a letter that has been accessed by The Ugandan Wire, the issuing exercise shall take place for a period of 15 days starting Monday 23rd November 2020 ending December 7th 2020.
“In order to ensure effectiveness in issuance, lists of persons whose national identity cards are ready for issuance are to be availed to the area village LC1 Chairperson,” the letter reads.
Members of the public who registered but have not received their national IDs have been urged to check with the area LC1 chairpersons before reporting to the designated issuance points.
The authority said that it has IDs whose registration dates as far back as 2014. Of the 1.8 million IDs, about 400,000 belong to students that registered during the 2017 nationwide Registration of learners programme.
According to Gilbert Kadilo, the public relations and corporate manager at NIRA, the children who registered under the 2017 school exercise are supposed to check for their IDs at the sub county level where their school lies.
He also noted that the NIRA district and regional officials will also remain open to receive people during this time.
