The National Organization of Trade Unions (NOTU) has come out to offer free legal services to the now former employees of Sanyu FM who were sacked by billionaire owner Sudhir Ruparelia when they reportedly rejected a 25% pay cut.
The employees then announced on social media that their wrongful dismissal had legal consequences and called upon any lawyers that “were not afraid to battle the Forbes enlisted tycoon in court” to get in touch with them.
NOTU Chairman General Usher Wilson Owere says he has asked the Association general secretary to establish the facts of the matter before the workers’ body can intervene.
He promised the sacked staff that NOTU is always ready to provide lawyers for any affected employees to ensure proper justice is dispensed.
Among the affected staff is celebrated Radio Presenter James Onen alias Fat Boy who had spent 21 years at the station, DJ Xzyl and David Oguttu.
“My watch is done. After just over 5 years, my time at 88.2 Sanyu FM has come to an end. My voice over this frequency was a dream, but sometimes dreams don’t turn out the way you hopped. To every one who tuned in, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives everyday.” Oguttu announced earlier today.
The company bosses insist that the pay cuts were inevitable because their financials were badly hit by the COVID-19 times. They claim that there had been a scheduled meeting to clear out the grievances but the staff were impatient to start a boycott.
