When President Museveni closed all academic institutions on 20th March 2020 as a way of reducing the spread of COVID-19, many university students especially those who come from distant places stayed in their hostels/rentals.

However, their situation has been deteriorating day by day especially after extension of the lockdown by 3 more weeks. This has cost them however, as they have started to lack food and other essential needs.

The situation has driven Makerere University Business School (MUBS) guild to partner with the office of the Dean of Students to assist their fellows who are stranded in hostels/rentals by giving them food.

According to a statement on MUBS social media platforms, the food relief is to benefit students who were unable to travel back to their respective homes but stayed in their hostels or rentals up-to-date.

“The relief will help these students at least through the 21 days of the quarantine extension as they continue to observe the safety guidelines,” the statement reads.

Speaking to our reporter, Vincent Mugabe, the MUBS Guild Information Minister said that the guild initiative has come out help their colleagues who are stuck at the moment and that the assistance shall be determined by the office of the dean of students.

“We got to know about students stuck in hostels and rentals, so this is an initiative that we as the leaders can find a way of saving our people. Students in hostels should send their information so that we know how many they are, so that we can inform the school or government to give them food,’’ Hon Mugabe revealed.

‘’We do not have funds but if we get the information we shall seek for funding while we are sure we have evidence but this support is free and thus no solicitations for contributions of any form shall be allowed.” He added.

He concluded by requesting the affected students to submit their details (name, course, registration number and current place of residence) to Ndinumukiza Wisdom (Guild Deputy Prime Minister) 0700315236 and Mugabe Vincent Information Minister 0757710981/0780822805.
