Jackson Kafuuzi, the Kyaka South MP was cleared by Parliament to serve as Deputy Attorney General and immediately sworn in by President Museveni at Sate House Entebbe.
The MP had been in waiting for close to two after the Appointments Committee of Parliament headed by Speaker Kadaga questioned his experience at the bar and refused to endorse his appointment to replace Mwesigwa Rukutana.
The committee is said to have demanded for evidence that Hon. Kafuuzi had competence in handling matters at the level of the High Court as there were rumors that he wasn’t in possession of a practicing licence for over 9 years.
According to sources in Parliament, his clearance was inevitable since the delay had left the August House stranded with electoral reforms. The new Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Ephraim Kamuntu reportedly told the House that they would only be ready to proceed with the debate on electoral reforms as soon as Kafuuzi took over office.
Kafuuzi, popped up in cabinet after a reshuffle late last year by President Museveni in which he appointed some of his heroes in the fight to amend the constitution and remove age limit at 75 years.
Together with Rafael Magyezi, who moved the motion in Parliament, the two fought tooth and nail to ensure that the bill was passed in late 2017. Kafuuzi was formerly in the opposition party FDC.
