The High Court in Kampala has committed to jail the Mbarara North MP and NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) member representing the Entrepreneur’s League, Robert Mwesigwa Rukaari over failure to pay Ugx 992 million.
MP Mwesigwa Rukaari reportedly paid UGX 300m and could not pay the balance (about 700m),and was thus committed to civil prison for 6 months as below
Rukaari failed to pay City Lender Mr. Gerald Kalungi, a son to tycoon Godfrey Kirumira.
Rukaari was arrested on Wednesday afternoon after a court order issued on November 17th 2022.
He is said to have taken the loan on May 10th 2021. Court also issued an order for the Member of Parliament to be awarded Shs 5000 as allowance for the subsistence for all the time he will spend in Prison.
Also, the creditor Mr. Kalungi was awarded Ugx 702 million as costs and interest for the loan.
The MP is now expected to pay up to Ugx 1.701 billion in total to the Creditor.
The Ugandan Wire has learned that the MP has for the past three months been looking for the President, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for a bail out to no avail. The closest he got to him was in Mbarara during the Tarehe Sita celebrations but even then, he could not properly talk to him and address his problems to him.
“He has severally been blocked from seeing the President and has been struggling. We hope that his arrest is a lesson to all politicians not to take loans they cannot pay.” A source close to the MP told this website.
Mwesigwa Rukaari is now expected to spend up to six months in Prison if he fails to pay the money.
