Kawempe North Councillor to the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Muhammad Ssegirinya is nursing losses after polling one vote in the just concluded election for Speaker of the House.
Ssegirinya, a comedic representative shocked many when he declared intentions for the position in a manner that immediately branded him the joker within the electorate instead of endearing him.
On election day (today), he was easily nominated and seconded by two fellow councillors who even promised to vote him for the position. He was however to face shock when after announcing the results, he had only polled one vote that he believes is from himself.
“Maybe I didn’t vote myself? But that is impossible because I remember ticking my name. And my fellow councillors who nominated me also say that they voted me. I should have at least three votes.” Ssegirinya told our reporter.
The controversial councillor has vowed to involve his lawyers whom he has instructed to get to the bottom of the matter and expose the ‘rigging’ that was at City Hall today.
Abubaker Kawalya an independent councilor from Rubaga North won the race with 17 votes followed by FDC’s Doreen Nyanjura who got 14 votes and Ssegirinya Muhammad 1 vote.
The voting process was presided over by Buganda Road Court, Chief Magistrate Miriam Okello Ayo. NRM’s Kyambogo councilor Bruhan Byaruhanga dropped out of the race and instead contested for deputy speaker, which he won.
32 councilors across Kampala took part of today’s election.
