Former Buikwe South Member of Parliament (MP) and Democratic Party (DP) stalwart, Dr Micheal Lulume Bayiga has today lashed at the party president Nobert Mao for what he termed as activities that are failing the party.
Dr Bayiga was speaking to the press today in Rubaga where he announced his intention to contest for the position of president for the oldest political party in Uganda.
He accused the current president of failing to attract members to the DP and pledged to work closely with MP Kyagulanyi’s ‘People Power’ movement to make DP ‘great again’.
Bayiga said that Mao has concentrated on supporting ridiculous candidatures instead of concentrating on building the party to enable it to compete favorably with other parties in elections.
Perhaps referring to DP’s support for former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi in the 2016 presidential election, Bayiga said his leadership will concentrate more on bringing more supporters to the DP and elevate it to a position it to a position it should be in.
DP was formed out of the religious and economic demographics that began to model politics in the Kingdom of Buganda before Uganda’s independence in 1954.
It is a conservative party that was led by historicals in Uganda’s politics including among others Benedicto Kiwanuka, Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere, and John Ssebaana Kizito among others.
