The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), the national army, has come out to comment on the ongoing saga that implicated Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. David Muhoozi in the illegal detention of former National Unity Platform (NUP) President Moses Nkonge Kibalama.

Kibalama revealed today in court that he has been under military detention for two weeks having been summoned by the Chief of Defence Forces Gen. David Muhoozi.

He said that while in detention, he was quizzed by Gen. Muhoozi who interrogated him about changes in the party leadership which saw Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu alias Bobi Wine take over as the new president.

While speaking to journalists earlier today, UPDF Deputy spokesperson Lt Col Deo Akiiki said Kibalama was never summoned by the UPDF. He said that the meeting between Gen Muhoozi and Kibalama happened long time back before Kibalama’s detention.

“I think it’s almost coming to a month, that meeting happened long before he even left his residence,” Lt. Col. Akiiki told the press.

On whether UPDF summoned Kibalama, Akiiki said that NUP’s people reached out to the CDF asking for a meeting which he agreed to.

“There was somebody whose names I am not at liberty to reveal who called the CDF’s office saying he wanted to meet someone from security. When the CDF was told, he said it was fine,” Mr. Akiiki is quoted.

“That person told the CDF that Mr. Kibalama wanted to talk to him about security issues. So Kibalama and his entourage met with the CDF. The meeting was attended by staff members of the CDF but most importantly it was in Mr. Kibalama’s own request and not the CDF’s.” He added.
