Former Kampala City Lord Mayor and Presidential aspirant Al Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebaggala has passed on aged 72 years.
According to family sources, the late had been admitted after falling in the bathroom while taking a shower.
The late Ssebagala who was more fondly known as Seya will be remembered as a Ugandan politician and businessman who was Mayor of Kampala City from 2006 to 2011.
He was also an independent presidential candidate in the 2006 general election before dropping out and joining the Kampala mayoral race.
The late Seya began his political career in 1998 by running for the position of Mayor of Kampala. Then a staunch member of the Democratic Party (DP), Sebaggala won the first direct elections for mayor of Kampala.
He was arrested in the United States of American (USA) two months later, in June 1998, on eight counts of fraud and lying to the US customs officials.
The following year in February, he received a 15-month sentence but was paroled in December, of the same year (1999).
He returned to Kampala in February 2000 to a warm welcome and considered a bid in the 2001 presidential elections.
Seya found love for President Museveni and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in 2012 after falling out with the DP.
Mr. Museveni consequently appointed him to Cabinet as a Minister Without Portfolio. He was however rejected by the parliamentary vetting committee on basis of qualifications.
By his death, he was still a presidential advisor in as much as he had since crossed over to Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) ahead of 2021.
