Over the weekend, images and videos of the Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng with masses of people most of whom were not wearing masks circulated across social media platforms, causing massive criticism and anarchy.
The Minister who is also at the frontline of fighting COVID-19 was seen addressing people without observing social distancing and other Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in her ancestral district Lira.
“I was training my people about how to put on face masks and the importance of observing social distance when a group of youths arrived and was very excited to see me, they named me Maama Corona, but I was not carrying out a political rally as allegedly said”, Dr. Acheng is quoted to have said.
She said all this yesterday when she appeared before the Parliament to respond to concerns of delayed distribution of masks all over Uganda.
She added she couldn’t let the Police arrest the crowd since they had come to see their daughter even if she is aspiring for Lira MP in the forth coming elections.
“All this is done by political opponents who want to tarnish my name.” Dr Aceng further said.
Dr. Acheng’s incident caused a hullabaloo especially from the opposition who insist the Minister should be dismissed for not following the directives that herself and the MoH team put forward.
