The budget parliamentary committee has discovered that the two radio samples at the factory that had won the bid to supply radios to all the households across the country were imported from China via DHL, a global logistics company.

The radios are intended to allow easy access to home learning by students during the pandemic especially in rural areas where people can’tafford to purchase them on their own.

According to the committee, the said factory has no capacity to manufacture or even assemble radios in Uganda, thus the importation from China.

The committee questions how the factory bypassed all the procedures and convinced the Ministry of Education to hand them the multi-billion shillings radio sets deal when all that the committee found at the ‘factory’ were transformers.

This visit comes after inquiries by the parliamentary budget committee into the supplementary budget request by government of shillings 353.8 billion Ugandan shillings for the purchase of 9 million radio set receivers presented to it by the state minister for finance David Bahati.
