The former Speaker of the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA), Mr. Dan Fred Kidega, is battling for life in Kampala after getting involved in a very nasty road accident on Saturday.
According to his brother, Democratic Party (DP) President Norbert Mao, Mr. Kidega’s accident was very serious as it was a head-on collision with a FUSO Lorry that saw his car off the road and rolling for several times.
“He was taken to TMR Hospital in Naalya. He is unconscious.” Mao said, adding that the injuries sustained are on his head, right arm and left leg.
Police are yet to disclose the scene of the accident.
According to TMR’s Dr. Erasmus Okello, Kidega’s brain rotated a bit on impact and got grazed on the rough surface of the skull.
That there was some bleeding in the brain but the scan shows that he is out of danger.
According to Mao, who is in close contact with medics looking after Kidega, “due to injury caused to his chest, blood seeped into his lungs as he coughed and so he needs life support to enable him get enough oxygen.”
“The doctor says they have sedated him (Kidega) so that his brain can rest. There’s no need for surgery on the brain. He is expected to heal naturally with the support of medication. He is expected to be conscious after two days. There’s no bone fracture. All the injuries are soft tissue. Doctors can treat us but it is God that heals. Let’s lift Dan up in prayer. It is well!” Mao said in a statement.
An old boy of Ntare School in Mbarara, Kidega was a student leader in the 1990s, rising to the rank of Chairman for the National Youth Council (NYC).
He worked as the Private Secretary to the Vice President of Uganda from 2000 to 2001. He also served as a Member of Parliament in the Seventh Parliament from 2001 until 2006, as a National Youth Representative.
