Former Deputy Attorney General and current Labour Minister Mwesigwa Rukutana has been denied bail by the Ntungamo Magistrate’s Court. This was inspite of his legal team presenting a billionaire cast as his sureties to acquire bail.

The Minister was yesterday remanded to Mbarara Kakiika based Kyamugorani Community Prison where the Magistrate has further remanded him until September 15th.

According to Rukutana’s lawyer, Mr. Owen Murangira, the charges levied against the current Rushenyi County MP, who just lost the NRM 2021 Primaries are bailable and he should have been set free.

He was arrested after a public outcry when a video was circulated on social media with him wrestling a gun away from one of his body guards and allegedly threatening to shoot supporters of his opponent.

The Minister’s legal team presented former Information Minister Jim Muhwezi, Igara East County MP Michael Mawanda and businessman Bob Kabonero as sureties for his release.

The billionaire sureties list was however not enough to buy his freedom when the State Prosecutors argued that he would interfere with evidence gathering and asked that he be denied bail.

As such, the former Attorney General is eligible to run for the position of Prison Katikiiro at the Mbarara based prison since his time has been extended.
