The government of Uganda has disclosed that they hope to acquire 4 million doses of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine through the African Union as arrangements to manufacture the serum brand in South Africa get finalised.
According to Prof David Serwadda, the head of the Government Advisory Committee on COVID-19 Vaccine Acquisition and Deployment, ‘the vaccine which will be manufactured in South Africa by Aspen Pharmaceutical Company will be a game changer.’
Prof Serwadda noted that the manufacture of the vaccine in Africa will boost access to it in a time when the countries on the continet are grappling with access to AstraZeneca vaccine from Serum Institute of India (SII).
According to him, the vaccine manufacture in Africa will help reduce expenditure on logistics to avail it to the population.
