Uganda’s Judiciary has announced that the second highest court in the land, the Court of Appeal will handle 40 criminal appeals in a scientific sessions held at the High Court in Mbarara beginning Tuesday, June 23.
According to the Ag. Registrar of the Court, Mr Ayebare Tumwebaze, three Justices of Appeal, Elizabeth Musoke, Stephen Musota and Remmy Kasule, will handle the said appeals using the Zoom Meeting technology.
“The Justices and counsel will physically be present at the High Court in Mbarara, but their clients will participate via the Zoom technology. This scientific approach will enable the Justices to handle cases expeditiously and economically as well as observing the Ministry of Health Guidelines on COVID-19.” Tumwebaze said.
The Registrar further informed the press that the court has already notified the lawyers to engage their appellant clients on ‘how to participate in the scientific court session.’
“The advocates are required to advise and sensitize their respective appellants on the new measures to avert COVID-19 and on the rationale for the resolution that proceedings be conducted remotely.” He further observed.
26 of the 40 cases are murder appeals, 08 are for aggravated defilement, 03 are in aggravated robbery, while another 03 are for rape. Two of the murder appellants are seeking to overturn life sentences earlier imposed on the by the High Court.
