Christians Defy President Museveni’s Church Reopening Order, Attend Services Overwhelmingly

Hundreds of Christians across the country, have today defied President Museveni’s order that places of worship (churches and mosques) would be reopened starting October 15, 2020 after six months of closure as government moves to relax the virus-induced lockdown.

The President, during his address to the nation on September 20 said places of worship would be reopened with only 70 congregants observing all the other SOPs, individual prayers/confessions, no night prayers, no kids’ Sunday School, among others.

According to our snoops stationed across the country, some places of worship reopened today with more than 70 congregants. Information we have received from our Eastern Uganda head correspondent Mr. Richard Nixon Gusango, St Andrews Cathedral in Mbale City had more than 100 congregants attending today’s service.

He however notes that the Churches are observing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as all the congregants were tested for temperature before accessing the venue.

In other churches, one of Uganda’s news dailies The Daily Monitor reported that priests were outcrying the overwhelming numbers of congregants that had turned upo today.

“We are dealing with a big number of Christians and the restrictions say we should not have more than 70 people. I think we have tried to follow the SOPs but the biggest challenge was to maintain the number because everyone leaves their home thinking is one of the 70 and there is no way you can chase them,” Father Joe King, the priest at St Kalori Lwanga is quoted saying.

The Reverend Father took a jab at the scientists advising Mr. Museveni saying they shouldn’t just sit in office and make rules. He says they should go on ground, find out what’s happening and review some of the SOPs, especially the number of congregants.
