National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war hero Col. (Rtd) Fred Mwesigye has lost the Nyabushozi County National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary elections to bitter rival Ambassador Wilson Kajwengye.
Col. Mwesigye, one of the original 42 guerrillas that had 27 guns and staged a protracted bush war against the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) government led by the late Dr. Milton Obote, had initially won the primary which his opponents contested.
The NRM Electoral Commission led by Dr. Tanga Odoi cancelled the election and set Thursday 15th October as the day for the re-election. In an unprecedented manner for a place like Nyabushozi, the people rallied against the incumbent Col. Mwesigye and voted overwhelmingly for the newcomer.
By the time of declaration, Ambassador Kajwengye had polled 22,148 total votes while Col. Mwesigye only gathered 14,121.
His election the fist time was contested because Mwesigye won with so many votes that the total tallied votes almost rallied the votes of what the Woman MP seat had registered, attracting a lot of ridicule and claims of massive voting irregularities.
