The Chairman of the Uganda Independent Electoral Commission Justice Simon Byabakama has sworn on national radio that unlike 2016 when ballot papers in Kampala and Wakiso arrived at 2-4 pm, the situation will be different in 2021.
While appearing at the Capital Gang on Capital Radio today morning, Byabakama blamed the “glitches” in 2016 to the leadership of the EC at that time and assured the nation that in his time, nothing of the sort will happen.
A listener sent in a message to the show suggesting that the EC Chairman uses the platform on air to assure the public and swear that in 2021, ballot papers in Kampala and Wakiso will be at the station early and he did that.
In 2016, voters in Kampala and neighbouring areas were frustrated when polling material arrived at 2pm in the afternoon. They had been lining up at their stations from 6am and by that time, most of them had lost patience and left the centres.
“I want to assure the public that the issue of ballot boxes being delivered late in Kampala and Wakiso will not happen again in 2021.” Byabakama said.
The EC are currently engaged in a General Update of the Voters’ Register that is happening until 11th December, 2019. New voters are being registered from their parishes while those who wish to transfer polling centres are also submitting in their applications.
