The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Commander Gen. David Muhoozi has personally apologised to downtown market vendors that were on Thursday last week, assaulted by Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel.

The ladies, were earlier today picked up by army personal and onlookers sought they had been arrested only to show up at a press conference mounted by the army commander who issued an apology to them.

The trio were assulted while the LDU enforced the presidential directive on the suspension of non-food markets and public transport.

“No one has a right to beat any Ugandan. We could have used other means to persuade them, and they would have left. Their handling was high handed and unjust. The culprits were apprehended and will be dealt with according to the law” Gen Muhoozi said.

President Museveni last week issued a ban on public transport and non-food markets for 14 days as a measure to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus that has since infected 33 Ugandans.

The President is set to address the nation today at 8pm to issue more guidelines and measures to control the spread of the virus.
