75 People Power Supporters Remanded Over “Wearing Army Uniform”

44 people including nine women have been arraigned before Kampala City Hall Court on charges of unlawfully wearing uniform declared to be for the exclusive use of persons performing in Armed Forces of Uganda and disobedience of lawful orders.

The group who were arrested on Wednesday this week from the National Unity Platform (NUP) offices in Kamwokya a surbub of Kampala were allegedly found wearing uniform with distinctive marks of the Security Forces like Lineyards, Peeps and Berets in a “manner likely to bring contempt on that uniform”, gathering in large numbers and not observing social distance in disobediance of the presidential order intended to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

They have appeared before Grade One Magistrate Valerian Tumuhimbise and denied the allegations.

They have been remanded to Kitalya (Men) and Kigo (Women)  Government Prisons until 23rd October, 2020 as investigations into their case continue.

Another 31 People including 21 women were charged before the Buganda Road Court also with offences in relation to Uniforms and sent on remand to Kitalya and Kigo Government Prison respectively.

They were also arrested from Kamwokya a Kampala surbub on Wednesday 14th October in possession of uniform or dresses with close resemblance of the Army Uniform and distinctive marks of security forces like Lineyards, Peeps and Berets.

16 of them return to Court on Monday 19th October before Grade One Magistrate Stella Amabilis while the other 15 return to Magistrate Dorothy Bagyenyi on Wednesday 21st October, 2020 as investigations into their case continue.
